Typically from the southern regions of China, floor-grade bamboo is a grass, not a hardwood. It grows with dramatic speed, reaching full maturity within three to four years. When growing, it requires minimal fertilization or growth management of any kind. Replanting after harvesting isn't necessary as inter-connected root systems automatically promote the growth of new canes. It is such a vigorous grass that American hobby gardeners are cautioned to plant bamboo only if they are willing to enjoy its graceful stalks in an ever-expanding grove, pretty much forever.
